Big 12 Recruiting Rankings

January 28, 2010

Here are the rankings from the incoming Big 12 recruiting classes.

1. Kansas State – At first glance you might not see it. Few do. But Bill Snyder built this program the first time on classes like this: heavy on jucos and speed. Bill has a system, and he recruits players to his system better than anyone else in the country. He likes dumb players that play fast. This class is classic Bill Snyder.
Key Recruits – DT Javonta Boyd, DT Ray Kibble

2. Texas A&M – It’s been a long time since Texas A&M has signed a better class than its Big 12 South brethren, but it looks like the sleeping giant is starting to stir. Mike Sherman has had a little time to adjust back to the college game, and the results look pretty good. The offensive line class is particularly impressive.
Key Recruits – DT Jonathan Mathis, DB Toney Hurd, Jr.

3. Nebraska – In all other sports you hear Nebraskans saying, “We just can’t get the athletes.” (Translation: Who wants to live in a frozen cornfield?) However, this year, Nebraska has been impressive on the recruiting front. Sporting one of the worst offenses in college football, they need all the help they can get.
Key Recruits – DT Jay Guy, OL Mike Moudy

4. Texas – The rich get richer. Mack Brown’s early recruiting strategy causes him to miss on players that his staff has been unable to fully evaluate, but he gets who he wants early and most of them stick. The loss of Ahmad Dixon really hurt this class, but don’t feel sorry for the Longhorns. There are plenty of mid to upper tier athletes that will show up in Austin this summer.
Key Recruits – QB Case McCoy, DT DeAires Cotton

5. Mizzou – Gary Pinkel’s days are probably numbered in Columbia, but that’s not stopping him from hitting the recruiting trail. A strong collection of homegrown talent boosts this class. Pinkel will also sign great athletes from Michigan, Iowa, and Nebraska, plus they stole longtime Longhorn lean Mitch Morse from Mack Brown.
Key Recruits – DE Kony Ealy, OL Mitch Morse

6. Baylor – This class could have been better, but the turmoil surrounding Art Briles’ attempts to leave Waco for Lubbock undoubtedly scared some recruits away. One way to classify this class is underrated. There are some gems in this class, and Art Briles did an excellent job of identifying second and third tier players up front instead of recruiting against other Big 12 schools. He signed football players. They may not be fast or strong, but they can play football.
Key Recruits – QB Tyrell Jenkins, LB Bryce Hagar

7. Oklahoma State – Oklahoma State seems to have peaked. With T-Boone’s hedge fund collapsing and the realization that a Don Quixote nightmarish landscape will not happen in the near future, the excitement surrounding the Stillwater campus has switched back to wrestling and basketball. Still, T-Boone made his usually forays into Texas and came away with some nice players.
Key Recruits – LB Caleb Lavy, DB Deion Imade

8. Oklahoma – The most puzzling class in the Big 12 this year belongs to Oklahoma. Stories of the coaches forgetting to call recruits, rescinding offers, arguing amongst themselves in recruits’ homes, and general disorganization are uncharacteristic of Sooner efforts in past years, but this year is a different story. Oklahoma has lost out on most head to head recruiting battles with other BCS schools.
Key Recruits – DT Julian Wilson, WR Sheldon McLain

9. Colorado - The administrations decision to keep Dan Hawkins around for another year probably held this class together. The Buffaloes seem to have a lot of talent on campus, but the players seem kind of spacey, giggly, and hungry. Hopefully for Coach Hawkins, this incoming group of freshman will become a foundation for Colorado’s return to prominence.
Key Recruits – TE Justin Favors, TE Henley Griffon

10. Iowa State – They are still in the Big 12, so the Cyclones hit the recruiting trail just like the rest of the conference. They just don’t have as much success doing it. They are the only Big 12 school that recruits Florida hard, and they find some gems there from time to time, and this year appears to be no exception.
Key Recruits – K Kirby Van Der Kamp, OL Shaban Dika

11. Kansas - Obviously, when you have a coach sumo wrestle players and call them names, your recruiting will suffer. Kansas is struggling on the recruiting front, and Mark Mangino is to blame. The new staff has to overcome a lot of obstacles to get good players to consider playing football in Kansas once again.
Key Recruits – LB Ed Fink, DE Jaqwaylin Arps

12. Texas Tech – Like Kansas, the the Texas Tech head coach abused his players and was let go. Like Kansas, The Red Raiders are struggling on the recruiting front. The new staff’s decision to become primarily a rushing offense has really confused recruits. With an emphasis on defense, Tommy Tuberville is finding out that most of the top defensive players in the area have never and will never consider going to Texas Tech.
Key Recruits – None

Tech has the Texas’ player of the year in Scotty Young, in addition to a 250WR rivals top WR out of florida…absolutely horrible work actually.

Hahahahaha you Aggies sure crack me up. Putting us at the bottom of the Big XII in recruiting simply for your painfully obvious bias is just laughable. Before you dismiss me just for being a Tech fan, i’ll go ahead and concede to you that that out of the 3 big teams from Texas along with OU that Tech sits in 4th among them. It’s no secret that Texas Tech doesn’t bring in stellar recruiting classes like UT or OU, people also know that we even get out-recruited by the Aggies usually too… but putting us at 12th really makes me question your mental health. You obviously haven’t been paying ANY attention to Tech recruiting or football (which doesn’t surprise me because Aggies are the most undeservingly pretentious assholes in the state). Tuberville isn’t going to a run heavy offense because of his hiring Neal Brown and Cumbie to keep the Air Raid in place. Yes, there will be more running balance, but we’re still the same offense getting even better. We’re adding Scotty Young (one of the top 10 pro-style QB’s in the nation), 2 Under Armor All-Americans in Jackson Richards and Kadron Boone, Scott Smith (the #1 JUCO DL in the nation), along with outstanding receivers from Florida in Shawn Corker and Ben McRoy. You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about, but if you want to keep us at “12th” then go ahead… that just makes it all sweeter when we kick your ass next year like we normally do.

    1. Case McCoy isn’t even the best QB committed to UT, much less the best QB in Texas’ 2010 classs this year.
    2. This is Sherman’s last year… but for the sake of laughter, lets hope not.

    Dear tech posters,

Wow! Tech fans have really lost perspective about their football program.

Techies, let me remind you that Leach’s gimmick offense is the only way your sub-par football players could compete. Even then, it took Leach many years before you got to 9/10 wins.

Now that Leach is gone, back to the cellar for you.

The Aggies have been irrelevant for the last 10 years only due to incompetence throughout the ranks. That problem looks close to being over.

Tech is irrelevant because…well…because…Lubbock is a bowl of turd dust.

The Aggies are mired in the middle of their most pathetic stretch in recent years but still have more to offer a player than a Tech team that has achieved recent, albeit short-lived, success.

Tech is lucky that Baylor is part of the BIG 12 South or Tech would have the distinction of being the worst program to commit to in the BIG 12 South.

This is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen. You really think the aggots have a better recruiting class than UT? Tech at 12th? What in the world makes you believe that Tuberville will change the offense when he has hired an OC that is known for high flying spread offense? I think this was written by a 12 yr old.

A lot of you guys seem kind of defensive, but this is the way it looks on paper right now. Of course, the only way to accurately grade a recruiting class is to like back in four or five years (or two years for K-State), but this is the way I see things right now. There could be some minor movements in these rankings over the next week depending on what happens, but most of these classes are filled with the exception of a couple of slots.

Brent, I don’t have Jeffcoat listed as a five star. He has all the tools, but something happened to him this year. I went to the Allen vs PW game this year, and Jeffcoat wasn’t even the best linemen on the field. The guy blocking him was a much better player, and anyone that attended that game would agree.

In response to this statement from above: “The Aggies have been irrelevant for the last 10 years only due to incompetence throughout the ranks. That problem looks close to being over.”

The aggies have only been relevant for 10 years total in their history. Those ten years came in the mid 80′s to 90′s when Eric Dickerson was cruising to SMU in his shiny new maroon trans am courtesy of a&m. The “incompetence through the ranks” seems to be the entire aggy cult if you ask me. There is no problem, it is just your place in the football pecking order, deal with it.

I think this is actually supposed to be a joke, people, albeit a bad joke. In the future, the author might not want to mix fact with fiction in such a way that you give yourself credibility with one hand (e.g. A&M having good OL recruits this year) and stealing away that credibility with the other hand (e.g. “[Bill Snyder] likes dumb players that play fast”). As satire, this fails… as a serious piece, this fails…

As someone that’s kept a close eye on OU’s recruiting class, I did get a kick out of OUr Key Recruits. I thought it was hilarious that 6’3″ 180 lb Julian Wilson (WR/S) would be a key contributor at DT. Also, Sheldon McClain being a key recruit at WR in a class with Kenny Stills, Justin McCay and Joe Powell all at WR was a hoot! While most of the rumors of recruiting problems must have been a joke, I wasn’t sure to what the “rescinding offers” was supposed to refer… rescinded offers from kids who wouldn’t qualify to enroll? Hmm…

You are not serious about this, are you?

Even before the Hicks and Jeffcoat signings, how are White, Davis, Bible, Dorsey, Wood, Jones, Cobbs, Benson, or Daniels not mentioned before McCoy. He is not even the best QB in the Texas class nor he close to being one of the top 5 to 10 players in UT’s class…

This list needs a lot more research.

  42. February 1, 2010 1:23 pm

Texas has arguably the number 1 recruiting class IN THE NATION, competing only with Florida for that title. Why oh why would they be the 4th best in their own conference? If this is a joke, please tell us now.
