Big XII Preview – Texas Tech

On a campus referenced by Sports Illustrated as “the ugliest campus in America”, one that looks like a “prison,” a statue of a suicidal equine sits with its ass pointed toward Old Dime Box. Pre GPS statue placement didn’t always go as planned at a school whose academic accreditation has been taken away, a school producing diplomas that are worth about as much as used condoms or empty packs of clove cigarettes.

With the possible exception of Houston, the entry into the SWC by Texas Tech was always the most questionable move of the old conference. North Texas, a bigger and better academic institution, would have been a more logical choice. Tech gained admittance by having the Lubbock elite boycott shopping in Dallas, the home of the SWC offices. First of all, you’re talking about people driving twelve hours to go shopping when they needed something other than Purina Jackrabbit Chow or Miracle Grow for tumbleweeds. Secondly, I guess Dallas didn’t mind the economic windfall of selling beef jerkey and wind proof storm windows to our Lubbock friends, but to allow a discredited school into the conference for this reason is simply baffling.

Texas Tech is not a rival of Texas A&M. It doesn’t matter what the record on the football field has been over the past few years. Texas Tech is like your partially retarded cousin. Sure, he may beat you at horseshoes once every other year at the family reunion when he’s not in jail, but he has to return to his life as a socially unacceptable piece of shit, while you go back to your life as one of society’s elite. It may not be fair, but it’s a harsh reality. Parents, send your kids to North Texas or Houston, not to Tech. Give then a chance to at least be mediocre in life.

Mike Leach is the first thing that comes to mind when you consider Texas Tech football. A drunk, Leach has tried to get other jobs, but he’s stuck in Lubbock because he’s bat shit crazy. Leach has been considered for other jobs, but when he spends his interview sipping on a bottle of low grade liquor and talking about pirates and other weird stuff, he kind of scares people away. His continuous public complaining about how sorry Tech is and how disadvantaged he is to be stuck in Lubbock doesn’t help his cause, either. Publicly complaining about not having postage supplied by his school and firing assistants in the middle of the season are things that make potential employers or employees want to stay away from him.

The Dallas Morning News, the second largest newspaper in the state, won’t even send a reporter to Lubbock to cover Tech games because Leach doesn’t let his players talk to the media. If Leach had been the coach when Tech was trying to get into the SWC, maybe North Texas or TCU would be in the Big XII today.

On the field, Tech returns a system quarterback from Ennis and just about everybody on offense. Offense isn’t the problem. A defense that is not consistent has and always will haunt Leach, but they have eight starters back on that side of the ball as well. This is the year Leach has been gunning for. He has his team in place, and big things are expected out of the Red Raiders this year. The schedule sets up nicely. The only non conference threat is a game at Nevada. The conference schedule is overall favorable with a game at Oklahoma in the middle of November as a game that could be for the south division crown.

Let’s get serious, though. Texas Tech, with all their begging to get in the SWC and getting lucky to slide into the Big XII, has never won an outright conference title in football since joining the SWC. This could be their best team ever, but Deathburger predicts a 8-5 record with a bowl win. They will start out beating the hell out of everyone and will probably be throwing into the endzone against SMU late in the fourth quarter again, but they are what they are, and that is a second rate school with second rate players. Once they start reading their press clippings and believing they are truly a great team, they will start losing games like Tech girls losing panties.

Leach has done all he can in Lubbock. This will be as good as a Tech team can be, and it simply won’t be good enough.

Tech Notes – Michael Crabtree is a good player. Tech is the only school in the nation with uniforms resembling NASCAR, with corporate sponsors other than the uniform manufacturer on their jerseys. Jones SBC Stadium is the second worst stadium in the Big XII south behind Floyd Casey Statium. Tech fans are known as classless clowns. Pat Green attended Texas Tech, thus he had no problem selling out to Nashville.

  1. You make so little since it’s depressing. You reference a comment about a campus that was published in the 1980’s. You can’t get the stadium name right and pretty sure you can’t find an AT&T logo on Tech’s uniforms. It’s an under armour logo you dumbass. Also, spell check is a beautiful thing. Then again, aggie shouldn’t need one with their fine academic offerings at a run of the mill state school.

  2. It must really suck to be an Aggie these days. But I see the highest tradition of all, “delusion,” remains in top form.

Best of luck to Mike Sherman (a coach I actually admire) and the gang. He’s going to need it in great quantities this year.

  3. Dear Deathburger,

After reading your idiotic ranting about a fine school in Lubbock, TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY I can tell the true lack of class one has when he is associated with a & m.

In reading your evaluation of TTU I can tell you think us not a rival, but yet your superior. It is evident in your blabbering. You only wish you had attended TTU. You cringe at the newest and latest aggie joke when you have to hear it. You wish people would not make fun of your ignorance, but they do and they do it frequently. Live with it and accept reality. You might change your name to dumb ass as it would suit you and your rambling.

  4. First off, are you even old enough to remember the SWC? And, I do not know why you keep bringing up TCU and UNT. If either of these schools were good enough to make it into the Big 12, they would have… Also, TCU was a part of the SWC… For a LONG time, it was one of the first schools to join. But I still do not know why you are even bringing up the SWC. I guess the SWC kinda goes hand in hand with your comment about our “ugly” campus. Have you walked outside and looked around lately? You do know you live in Bryan/College Station, Right? You also mention that Tech has not won a conference title outright… This is true, but we are the only school in the big twelve that has won more than half of its games since the Big 12 started. No other school can claim that. Did you read that… Half its games. That is pitiful that A&M hasn’t one more than half its games in a season. And remember, almost all of these season… all but 3 or 4 have been headed up by “the drunk”. So, drunk he can still whoop A&M. Basically your this rant proves how we have totally crushed A&Ms spirit. Comments like, “It doesn’t matter what the record on the football field has been over the past few years,” shows exactly how much we own you. Like Dunagan said “In reading your evaluation of TTU I can tell you think us not a rival, but yet your superior.” He beat me to the punch. Or are you just upset that Tech is on the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine?
Either way, see you in October.

  5. I didn’t realize that Tech was the only school that had won half its games since the inception of the Big 12.

    Thanks for the information.

  6. “One of society’s elite?” Texas A&M? The Aggies? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!! Whew! That was a good one. Can you imagine: “Well, yes Warren, I understand the intellectual heft your Yale diploma implies, but I’m right there with you: I went to Texas A&M!” Oh, I’m laughing so hard I gotta wipe away the tears. Good times.

So anyway, I’ve got a joke for you: How do you keep an Aggie from abusing his dog?

Answer: Just dye it red and black. He won’t beat it for 4 years.

  7. And while we’re at it, according to this press release, Texas Tech is still, in fact, accredited by the SACS.

But you’re right about those Tech jerseys, what with all the corporate logos on them and all! Just look at one! I see, um, an Under Armour logo, and… uh… wait, there’s another Under Armour logo! Wow, just like a NASCAR driver!

I know, I know, it was unfair of me to spend a whole 30 seconds thumbing through a research tool as arcane as Google. Hey, perhaps the martini-sipping, high society blue bloods at Texas A&M (ya know, I hear it’s the Harvard of the Bryan-College Station metro area!) should add a section on Google to their basic computer class!

  8. Howdy!

In my family we’ve always called Tech “ZIT” – the Zorro Institute of Technology.

It’s quite clear to me from reading the above posts that in addition to Advanced Pustule Popping and Tortilla Throwing 101, courses in using any kind of spell checker should be added to the core curriculum of all…er…um..”programs”..at this glorified JC.

    Hope this helps, and Gig’em!

  9. Great article, but as with someone that appears to have amazing journalistic integrity, you should do your homework…. A few rebuttals to your “preview.”

Ugly campus? Check out this link: http://www.thinkfinancial.com/blog/college-admissions/the-20-ugliest-college-campuses-in-the-usa-a-list-of-all-ugly-colleges/. Look who was #17. And the SI article about the Tech campus was from 1984, but no where can I find the damn article. The good old Regan years.

A few minor stats about TTU:

Currently the most consecutive bowl games in the big 12 – 2000-2007.

Currently the most consecutive winning seasons in the big 12 (12).

Tech has won 9 of the last 12 games vs. the Ags.

Ags haven’t won in Lubbock since 1993.

Tech has never had a losing season while in the Big 12 (has been .500).

    18 returning starters…..

Now, the SWC bit is interesting. I will plagiarize for a while:

The Southwest Conference (SWC) was a college athletic conference in the United States that became defunct in May of 1996. It consisted of schools in the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Established in 1914, its charter members were the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Baylor University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma A&M University (currently Oklahoma State), Southwestern University (in Georgetown, Texas), and Rice University. Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) joined the SWC in 1958, followed by the University of Houston for the 1976 season (UH won the SWC football championship in that 1976 season).

And something I didn’t know: A failed move by Governor John Connally to have the school placed into the Texas A&M University System, as well continued disagreement and heated debate regarding the school’s new name, kept the name change from being approved.

North Texas would have been a good choice, Denton brings a lot talent to the mix….. I am shocked they didn’t keep Southwestern when the made the Big 12….is that still a school? I think the plan was clear, bring in Tech (with all the money coming in from the oil boom) and then make them a part of A&M, but Tech had gotten too much money and the politicians probably got paid off.

I have no problem admitting that a lot of Tech people think A&M is their main rival; just like A&M people think UT is their main rival; and UT thinks OU is their main rival; and OU thinks BCS #1 or 2 are their main rival. The fact is, the TTU, A&M, OU trifecta is one big rival. You have to beat all three to stand a chance at the title, and if you beat all three and win the conference you are going to a BCS game. Because college football is now about winning the national championship, or getting to the best bowl game possible. No one cares anymore about who wins the Big 12, and even if you do win it – you are not guaranteed a shot at the national championship. (Please see OU’s history for this.)

In fact, you are almost better off not winning the Big 12. Take this situation – A&M finishes 11-1 and Tech finished 11-1. A&M beats Tech but loses to UT, Tech loses to A&M but beats UT. A&M would get the nod for the Big 12 championship. So, then A&M loses in the Big 12 game to Mizzou, they are now 11-2; Tech would have a higher BCS rank because they only have one loss. Mizzou gets the automatic bid, and the at large would probably go to Tech over A&M. This is why we need to be like the Big 10 and not have a conference final.

On another note, I liked Fran, I mean really liked him. I knew that he was capable of taking a team and completely shutting down their studs, rendering them useless. The only problem was that the team he did it to was his……

Oct 18 should be fun, I’ll be the guy drinking Leach’s “water.”

  10. Sorry, two minor corrections. A&M was ranked the 18th ugliest campus, not 17. And the rivalry was also meant to include the T-sips, making a 4 way quadfecta (Bush helped me with that word).

  11. Please be more original. You are talking about things that happened before anyone on the Ags was even born. It’s like making fun of Bush because he makes up words, old news.

As for the ugly campus: http://www.thinkfinancial.com/blog/college-admissions/the-20-ugliest-college-campuses-in-the-usa-a-list-of-all-ugly-colleges/. Look who was #18. And the SI article about the Tech campus was from 1984, but no where can I find the damn article. The good old Regan years.

Ags haven’t won in Lubbock since 1993.
And now with Ruffin on defense things are looking better.
Tech has never had a losing season while in the Big 12 (has been .500).

I look forward to this year and; barring a fluke A&M loss (Miami and/or OK state) or a TTU loss to Nebraska; both should be undefeated for the Oct 18th game. If Sherman can shut down all five TTU receiver’s, and Lane doesn’t fumble, it should be close. However, I wouldn’t doubt Tech could lose to Nevada.

Either way, I’m bringing the tortillas.

  12. Losing to Arkansas State … wow. Way to go tamu, way to show the nation your football prowess.

Texas Tech, described by author James Michener as “the most beautiful west of the Mississippi until you get to Stanford.” Ugly? Ugly? Are you serious? Talk about class and education standards and all you can say is that Texas Tech is ugly? Wow.

As far as rivals? We could care less. A&M hangs on to their rival with UT solely for the sake that somebody might actually pay attention to them every once in a while.

A&M’s motto, “gig ’em”, refers to the forcible intrusion of a frog by one’s thumb through route of either it’s oral cavity or anus, for the purpose of killing it. Hmmm … And what in the world is up with all the hip-hugging military guys? I mean, I know the women in College Station are 2’s and 3’s at best, but seriously? http://pokerblog.blogspot.com/squeeze_ags.jpg

Your mascot: a dog. Not something cool like a pitbull or even a bulldog. You’re mascot is Lassie.

And last, you’re fight song. Something to the tune of, “we hate UT, we hate UT, we hate UT and it’s really unfair because they beat us at everything.” Let’s make sure to get together the night before a game and practice cheering. Practice. Does it really take practice. How long DOES it take an aggie to learn to cheer? Better yet, how long does it take for one to win?

  13. Aggie’s are just plain STUPID…never met one that had a thing going for them. Worse football team in a looooong time. Also shows how immature you are…..just another point regarding aggies and how STUPID they are. Have a nice day anyway…that is if you remember how????
